Serif

A small horizontal or vertical line at the end of one of the main lines making up a letter or number.
In the examples below, the left letter in each pair has serifs. The right letter in each pair does not.
Some courts require attorneys to use fonts with serifs. Studies have shown that long passages of text in a font with serifs are easier to read than long passages in text without serifs (also known as sans-serif type).
