An international trade mark application may be made, designating the UK and/or EU, under the WIPO Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks 1989 (Madrid Protocol). Such applications are processed by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) before being sent to the national/regional offices for examination.
