On January 1, 2015, the Connecticut Department of Labor issued updated guidance clarifying Connecticut’s Paid Sick Leave law and provided a new Paid Sick Leave law poster for employers to display.
Connecticut amended its Paid Sick Leave Law on June 6, 2014 (C.G.S.A. § 31-57r to § 31-57w; see Legal Update, Ogletree Deakins: Connecticut Legislature Makes Changes to Connecticut Paid Sick Leave Law). The amendments, which became effective on January 1, 2015:
  • Determine coverage based on whether an employer has 50 or more employees in Connecticut on its payroll during the week of October 1.
  • Prohibit employers from firing or transferring employees to other job sites to avoid the 50-employee coverage threshold.
  • Provide that employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked during whatever 365-day year the employer uses to calculate employee benefits.
Now that these amendments have gone into effect, the Connecticut Department of Labor has:
  • Issued updated guidance on its website that clarifies the Connecticut Paid Sick Leave law.
  • Provided a new poster for employers to display.
