The USPTO has announced a new initiative to provide constructive input on examination guides before they are finalized and is requesting comments on Draft of Examination Guide 3-12: Universal Symbols in Marks.
The USPTO has announced a new initiative for practitioners to provide input on examination guides before they are finalized. As part of this initiative, the USPTO is asking practitioners and other stakeholders to comment on a draft version of Examination Guide 3-12: Universal Symbols in Marks. The guide is meant to:
  • Promote consistency in the examination of applications for marks featuring universal symbols.
  • Discuss universal symbols.
  • Address the relevant examination issues.
  • Provide examples illustrating the concepts discussed.
The draft copy of the examination guide on universal symbols features a web-based collaboration tool that allows users to:
  • Comment on a topic.
  • View and respond to others' comments.
  • Vote to agree or disagree with a particular comment.
The USPTO has asked for comments to be submitted by August 16, 2012.
