The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released the 2014 Privacy and Data Security Update, which provides an overview of the FTC's privacy and data security enforcement, policy initiatives, consumer outreach and business guidance.
On June 30, 2014, the FTC released the 2014 Privacy and Data Security Update which provides an overview of the FTC's enforcement, policy initiatives, and consumer outreach and business guidance in the areas of privacy and data security. This report addresses FTC actions from January 2013 through March 2014, providing summaries of notable FTC actions and initiatives in the following categories:
  • Privacy and data security enforcement actions, including in the areas of:
    • credit reporting and financial privacy;
    • US-EU Safe Harbor compliance;
    • children's privacy and Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) compliance; and
    • telemarketing and the Do Not Call provisions of the Telemarketing Sales Rule.
  • Promulgation of rules regulating specific areas of consumer privacy and security.
  • Workshops.
  • Reports, surveys and policy recommendations related to consumer privacy and data security.
  • Consumer education and business guidance.
  • International engagement, including:
    • investigative assistance and other enforcement cooperation; and
    • cooperation with the European Commission and other foreign governmental authorities in developing privacy policies governing cross-border data transfers.
