US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced two developments concerning its E-Verify service, the electronic employment eligibility verification service co-managed by the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration.

E-Verify Record Deletion

On October 3, 2014, USCIS announced that on January 1, 2015, it will delete all E-Verify records created before December 31, 2004. USCIS also noted that to comply with the retention and disposal schedule of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), it will, on an annual basis, continue to purge all records older than ten years. To access cases created before December 31, 2004, employers must download E-Verify's new Historic Records Report (which will contain transaction records for all cases more than ten years old) by December 31, 2014. Employers can find more information at USCIS: Frequently Asked Questions: E-Verify: NARA Initiative.

myE-Verify Launch

On October 6, 2014, USCIS announced the launch of myE-Verify, a website featuring resources such as Self Check and Employee Rights Toolkit, which allow employees to access and maintain secure personal E-Verify accounts. The myE-Verify website introduces the following new identity protection services:
  • The ability of individuals to set up free secure personal accounts to manage their information in E-Verify and Self Check.
  • A Self Lock feature that lets an employee lock his social security number so others cannot gain illegal employment through its unauthorized or fraudulent use in E-Verify.
  • Access to the myResources site, containing information to educate employees and employers about their rights and responsibilities in the employment eligibility verification process.
Self Lock and myE-Verify accounts will initially only be available in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, Virginia and Washington D.C., but USCIS plans to expand myE-Verify, with additional features, throughout the country.
