Epstein Becker: Connecticut Passes Pay Equity Act and Intern Protections | Practical Law

This Law Firm Publication by Epstein Becker & Green, P.C. discusses two laws recently enacted in Connecticut. Public Act 15-196, titled  "An Act Concerning Pay Equity and Fairness", makes it illegal for Connecticut employers to prohibit employees from discussing their wages with other employees and from inquiring about other employees' wages. Connecticut employers are also prohibited from retaliating against employees for discussing or inquiring about employees' wages. This law, often called the "pay secrecy law" took effect on July 1, 2015. The other law, Public Act 15-56, provides unpaid interns with the same protections from discrimination and harassment that regular employees enjoy, including in hiring, discharge and in the manner in which employers advertise internships. The law applies to all Connecticut employers that use interns, which the law defines in detail. The law takes effect on October 1, 2015.
