The Permanent Court of Arbitration has published its annual report for 2011.(Free access.)
The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) has released its 111th Annual Report - 2011 (see PCA Annual Reports). The PCA administered a record number of 69 cases in 2011, 19 of which were submitted in 2011, including:
  • Three state-state arbitrations.
  • 40 investor-state arbitrations under bilateral or multilateral investment treaties.
  • 24 arbitrations under contracts or other agreements to which at least one party is a state, state-controlled entity, or intergovernmental organisation.
  • One case under a national investment law.
  • One case under the PCA Optional Rules for Arbitration of Disputes relating to Natural Resources and/or the Environment.
The PCA received 36 requests to act as appointing authority in 2011, which is down from 42 requests in 2010.
Last year also saw the number of PCA member states increase to 115 and the adoption of the PCA Optional Rules for Arbitration of Disputes Relating to Outer Space Activities, as developed by an Advisory Group of experts in space law.
