AB 241 was signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown on September 26, 2013. Under the new law, private individuals who directly or indirectly employ or exercise control over the wages, hours or working conditions of a domestic worker must pay the worker overtime at a rate of time-and-a-half for all hours worked over nine hours in a workday and for all hours worked more than 45 hours in a workweek. AB 241, which becomes effective January 1, 2014, will remain in effect for three years. Unless it is extended, the law will expire on January 1, 2017.
