The FTC updated a section of Complying with COPPA: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that addresses schools' compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
On March 20, 2015, the FTC published a notice announcing revisions to Complying with COPPA: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). The revisions are intended to streamline the FAQs and also include updated material that addresses recent concerns of parents and educators on how schools can comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The FTC staff revised the answers to FAQs M.1, M.4. and M.5, which address:
  • Whether a school can give consent to a website or mobile application on a parent's behalf to collect, use or disclose students' personal information.
  • Best practices on keeping parents informed of consents the school has provided to third parties.
  • The information a school should seek from third parties before entering into an arrangement that permits the collection, use or disclosure of student personal information.
  • Other laws that may apply to student personal information.
The FAQs are staff guidance and are non-binding on the FTC.
