On 1 June 2011, the biannual Singapore International Arbitration Forum (SIAF), entitled The Future for International Arbitration, was held in Capella, Singapore.
The conference was presented by Maxwell Chambers and co-organised by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). The SIAF brought together arbitration practitioners from around the world to discuss trends and concerns in arbitration, with a focus on Asia.
This year's conference was attended by close to 200 experts and practitioners from the international legal and arbitration community. Specifically, the conference dealt with insurance arbitration, which has become a key area of arbitration and dispute resolution following the global financial crisis.
The conference began with a look at the new SIAC Rules, and in particular the provisions for emergency arbitrators and expedited proceedings. The day continued with a discussion of the challenges involved in insurance arbitration and a session on Asian developments, which featured a panel of eminent arbitration practitioners from around Asia. The conference concluded with the inaugural SIAF Debate on whether the rising costs of arbitration have made it an unattractive method of dispute resolution.
The speakers at this year's event included: Dr Michael Pryles, Professor Lawrence Boo, Justice Quentin Loh SC, Philip Jeyaretnam SC, EY Park, Zia Mody, Chelva Rajah SC, Sally Harpole, Nakul Dewan, Hop Dang, Harpreet Singh SC, John Savage, Liu Yuwu, Justyn Jagger, Dr Andreas Shell, John Pyall, Peter Newall, Judith Gill QC, Meef Moh and Nikolaus Pitkowitz.
