Governor Haslam signed the bill which expands the scope of garnishments from the garnishment of salaries, wages, or other compensation to garnishment of "earnings." With this change, which takes effect on September 1, 2016, the scope of garnishments reaches amounts owed to independent contractors as well as employees. The publication also addresses amendments to the Tennessee Lawful Employment Law Act (E-Verify Act) to, among other things, require private employers with 50 or more employees to enroll in the E-Verify program and verify the employment eligibility of new hires. These changes become effective on January 1, 2017.
