Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS)

The federal agency formerly responsible for chartering, regulating, and supervising thrifts and their holding companies. Under the Dodd-Frank Act, the various regulatory and supervisory responsibilities of the OTS were transferred on July 21, 2011, to the Federal Reserve Board (FRB), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OTS was formally dissolved on October 19, 2011. For more information on the OTS dissolution, see Practice Note, Summary of the Dodd-Frank Act: Regulatory Structure. For information on the regulation of thrift institutions, see Practice Note, US Banking Law: Overview: Thrift Institutions.
