On 22 March 2013, the European Commission proposed EU ratification of the UN Firearms Protocol. The purpose of the UN Firearms Protocol is to facilitate and strengthen co-operation in order to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in small arms, such as handguns and pistols.
