Until 6 April 2012, the part a member's pension rights in a contracted-out money purchase (COMP) scheme (www.practicallaw.com/1-205-6985) or an appropriate personal pension (APP) scheme (www.practicallaw.com/7-504-9837) that derived from rebates the member's employer and the member received on their national insurance contributions (NICs) (www.practicallaw.com/8-201-8297) were subject to special rules and known as "protected rights". The rules and restrictions relating to former protected rights were abolished on 6 April 2012.
