The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has published commentary guidance on the main provisions in the three sets of regulations which now govern the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). The DCLG promises the document will be updated regularly as further legislative changes occur. Chapters in the guidance summarise the areas covered by the regulations, including:
  • The day-to-day administrative processes of the LGPS, contained in the Local Government Pension Scheme (Administration) Regulations 2008 (SI 2008/239).
  • The provisions relating to outsourcing and admitted body status. The guidance refers to the DCLG's recent informal consultation, which closed on 10 April 2008 (see Legal update, Review of admitted body status provision in the Local Government Pension Scheme).
  • The provisions about joining the scheme, paying contributions and calculating benefits, contained in the Local Government Pension Scheme (Benefits, Membership and Contributions) Regulations 2007 (SI 2007/1166).
  • The policy review group (recently established as a broad-based forum to consider key issues about the LGPS's future, including the requirement to put in place a cost-sharing arrangement by 31 March 2009).
  • The transitional provisions contained in the Local Government Pension Scheme (Transitional provisions) Regulations 2008 (SI 2008/238).
