Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)

A statute that authorizes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to manage hazardous waste from the cradle to the grave. RCRA places under the EPA's purview the disposal, storage, treatment, generation, and transportation of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste. The statute sets national goals for:
  • Protecting the environment and human health from the hazards of waste disposal.
  • Conserving natural resources and energy.
  • Ensuring environmentally sound waste management systems.
  • Reducing waste generation.
