Traditional Campaign

Also known as a bottom-up campaign. A type of union organizing campaign that is started by one or more employees who approach a union or are approached by a union, and want the union to collectively bargain with their employer to improve working conditions, such as:
  • Wages.
  • Employee benefits, including:
    • defined benefit plans;
    • insurance coverage; and
    • retiree medical benefits.
  • Job security.
Unlike a corporate campaign, unions usually try to keep a traditional campaign secret from the employer for as long as possible.
Typically, a union's main goal in a traditional campaign is to get enough union authorization cards to force either:
  • The employer to recognize the union as the exclusive bargaining representative of a bargaining unit.
  • A secret-ballot election before the National Labor Relations Board.
