On November 8, 2012, the US Copyright Office announced interim rules allowing groups of related serial issues to be filed through the Copyright Office's electronic registration system. Although not mandatory, the Copyright Office strongly recommends electronic filing to enhance efficiency and expedite handling of claims.
Under these rules, applicants must submit two complimentary subscription copies of the serial to the Library of Congress, unless otherwise directed by the Copyright Office. However, the applicant may provide either a hard copy deposit or digital file format complying with Section 202.20(b)(2)(iii) of the Copyright Act.
Group serial claims are limited to claims in works that are both:
  • Collective works by the same author and claimant.
  • Works made for hire.
These interim rules are effective immediately.
