On 26 October 2010, Warsaw hosted a major national conference on investment treaty arbitration. The event was co-organised by the Polish Court of Arbitration (Lewiatan) and the State Treasury Solicitors’ Office - the agency providing and coordinating legal representation for the Polish Government in international commercial and investment disputes, among other things.
The programme of the conference consisted of three panels which focused on:
  • Current problems in investment treaty arbitrations.
  • Procedural matters, with particular emphasis on the recent amendments to the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.
  • The interplay between international investment law and European Union law, in light of the recent initiatives of the Commission and the Council.
The conference met with considerable interest with more than 100 participants attending including academics, practitioners and highly ranked government officials (including the President of the State Treasury Solicitors' Office and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland). The high turnout and interest shown in the conference confirms the vital importance of investment treaty arbitration to the Polish state (which has faced serious claims in recent years made among others by the Dutch Eureko group and the French Vivendi concern), and to arbitration practitioners in Poland, highly interested in marking and increasing their presence in the world of investment treaty disputes.
