Glossary
Charity
An institution that is:
- Established exclusively for charitable purposes.
- Subject to the control of the High Court.
(Section 1(1), Charities Act 2011 (ChA 2011).)
An institution may be incorporated or unincorporated, and includes a trust or an undertaking (section 9(3), ChA 2011).
A large number of charities are not registered charities, but fall into one of the following categories of charity that are either not required or not able to register with the Charity Commission:
