The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) has announced its 2011 caseload statistics and launched a new Swedish Arbitration Portal which provides free access to English translations of Swedish court decisions on arbitration issues.

SCC statistics 2011

The SCC has released statistics of the number of new cases filed with the SCC in 2011. The number of cases is slightly higher than in 2010, with 199 new cases registered (up from 197). The new cases continue to be almost evenly split between international and domestic cases. Of the 199 new cases, 116 cases were registered under the SCC Rules and 62 cases under the SCC Rules for Expedited Arbitrations. There were also cases registered for:
  • Emergency arbitration (2).
  • Mediation (6).
  • Administrative services relating to ad hoc arbitration (2).
  • UNCITRAL arbitration (5).
  • Appointing experts (6).
Parties came from 47 different countries. Russians continued to be the most frequent non-Swedish parties at SCC, followed by parties from Germany, the US and Switzerland. Further details are available through the SCC's website.
PLC Arbitration has updated its Table of institutional statistics.

Swedish Arbitration Portal

In May 2012, the SCC launched its new Swedish Arbitration Portal, which provides free access to English translations of Swedish court decisions on arbitration issues. The database will be updated regularly as new translations of court decisions become available. At present, the oldest case translated is a 1980 Supreme Court decision.
The Portal contains decisions from all instances of Swedish courts on issues related to arbitration, domestic and international, the purpose being to enhance transparency by making Swedish case law more accessible to an international audience.
Earlier this year, the SCC expanded the range of unofficial translations of Swedish legislative acts available through its website. The Swedish Arbitration Act is available in Chinese, English, French, German, Polish, Romanian, Russian and Spanish. The Swedish Contracts Act, Sales of Goods Act and Interest Act are now available in Chinese and Russian.
English translations of a substantial number of Swedish legislative acts are also available through the official website of the Swedish government; a link is available on the SCC site. The expansion was a joint initiative with Stockholm law firms active in international arbitration, with the aim of increasing transparency.
