The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) has opened an arbitration centre in Hong Kong.
On 24 September 2012, the new CIETAC Hong Kong Arbitration Centre was launched at a conference organised by the Department of Justice, together with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), CIETAC and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The new Centre, the first CIETAC centre outside the mainland, will provide a platform for co-operation between the arbitration professions of Hong Kong and Mainland China.
In June 2011, Hong Kong's new Arbitration Ordinance came into effect, increasing Hong Kong's appeal as a venue for parties looking to resolve disputes efficiently and with certainty (see Legal update, Hong Kong’s new Arbitration Ordinance comes into effect). In establishing the new centre, CIETAC recognises the growing status of Hong Kong as a centre for international arbitration.
