Jackson Lewis: New York Enacts Gender Equality Laws | Practical Law

This Law Firm Publication by Jackson Lewis P.C. addresses several workplace equality bills that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law on October 19, 2015. Amendments to the New York Labor Law allow employees to freely discuss wages, and prohibit employees from being paid lower wages than someone of the opposite sex who performs equal work under similar working conditions. Amendments to New York's Executive Law expand sexual harassment protections to employers with fewer than four employees, allow successful sex discrimination litigants to recover attorneys' fees, expand familial status discrimination protections to the workplace, and require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees that suffer from pregnancy-related conditions. These laws become effective on January 19, 2016.
