Jackson Lewis: Puerto Rico Governor Signs Bill to Expand Paid Sick Leave Use | Practical Law

This Law Firm Publication by Jackson Lewis P.C. discusses the expansion of Puerto Rico's paid sick leave law. The Commonwealth approved House Bill 695, which amends the law, Act 180, to allow a non-exempt employee to use up to five days of accrued leave to care for an ill spouse, child, parent, or a minor, elderly, or disabled individual for whom the employee is a legal guardian. Employers can require medical certificates if these absences exceed two working days and employees can only use the expanded sick leave if they maintain a balance of at least five sick leave days. This expanded use of sick leave, which applies to businesses of 15 or more employees, is effective immediately.
