The impact of EU state aid rules on all fields of the law and economy has become particularly apparent due to the financial crisis. State aid law plays an increasing role in the area of public services and public private partnerships (PPPs), and in such fields as tax law and environmental law. It is also used by the European Commission (Commission) to restructure entire industry sectors, in particular the European banking sector. This chapter provides a summary of the current status of EU state aid law and recent developments from September 2009 to October 2010.
