Regulatory proceedings against accountants: overview

This practice note provides an overview of the regulatory regime for accountants in the UK. In particular, it considers the disciplinary schemes of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and the Accountancy and Actuarial Discipline Board, which investigate and hear allegations of professional misconduct by accountants.

Note: The FSA was abolished on 1 April 2013 and the majority of its functions transferred to two new regulators: the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) (see, Legal update, Legal cutover to the new UK regulatory regime for financial services). This practice note is currently being updated in light of this development.
