Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU)

The judicial body of the EU and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom).
Article 19(1) of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) provides for a CJEU, which "shall ensure that in the interpretation and application of the Treaties the law is observed".
To fulfil this objective, the CJEU:
  • Reviews the legality of the acts of the EU Institutions.
  • Ensures that member states comply with obligations under the Treaties.
  • Interprets EU law at the request of the national courts and tribunals.
The CJEU consists of the Court of Justice and the General Court.
(The Civil Service Tribunal used to be part of the CJEU, until it was dissolved on 1 September 2016.)
For more information on the CJEU, see Practice note, Court of Justice of the European Union.
