Under a recent amendment to Vermont's contests and sweepstakes law, a party can now charge an entrance fee for contests based on skill.
Vermont recently enacted a new law amending its contest and sweepstakes law. Under the amendment, companies or individuals running a game of skill or other promotion not based on chance are no longer prohibited from requiring or paying any kind of fee or other consideration to:
  • Enter the game.
  • Continue to play the game.
  • Remain eligible for the game.
The new law became effective on April 26, 2013.
Vermont, like most states, still prohibits parties from charging an entrance fee for games of chance.
