The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, delivered his 2013 Autumn Statement on 5 December 2013. The Statement includes a number of measures to bolster the UK's science and technology bases. Among other things, the government will:
Develop a network of Quantum Technology Centres with an investment of £270 million over five years. The centres will focus on the application of quantum research and the development of related new industries.
Support research and innovation in emerging powers and build partnerships with the UK through an annual fund of £75 million.
Set up a global collaborative space programme with an £80 million fund.
Produce a science and innovation strategy for the Autumn Statement 2014, which will include a roadmap for the government's commitment to science.
