Maryland passed legislation to increase the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by July 2018. The minimum wage will rise incrementally, with the first increase to $8.00 per hour taking effect on January 1, 2015. Governor Martin O'Malley signed the bill into law on May 5, 2014.
On May 5, 2014, Governor Martin O’Malley signed legislation to gradually increase the Maryland minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by July 2018.
The first increase to $8.00 per hour will take effect on January 1, 2015. The minimum wage will then rise to $8.75 per hour by July 2016, and $9.25 per hour by July 2017. It will then ultimately increase to $10.10 per hour by July 2018. The base wage for tipped workers will remain at $3.63 per hour.
Under the law, employers will be permitted to pay a training wage of 85% of the current state minimum wage to workers under the age of 20 for their first six months of employment.
Businesses exempt from the new state minimum wage requirement include:
  • Seasonal amusement parks.
  • Cafes and restaurants with annual income below $400,000.
  • Maryland’s one drive-in movie theater.
Maryland has joined Connecticut to become the second state to increase its minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.
