Landfill

A solid waste disposal site in which refuse is compacted, spread, and then covered with a layer of soil as a method of minimizing any environmental impact. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that landfills install liners and certain treatment systems that prevent groundwater and surface water contamination. While landfills are often used to dispose of industrial waste, regulations generally permit burial of only non-hazardous material.
