A Practice Note explaining how to serve documents after the complaint (such as motions, memoranda, and discovery) under the Massachusetts Rules of Civil Procedure and the Massachusetts Rules of Electronic Filing in Massachusetts trial courts. Specifically, this Note explains the basics of serving documents, including who can serve, what and when to serve, and whom to serve. This Note also explains acceptable service methods, including email, US mail, delivery, and electronically by eFileMA (e-service), as well as how to help prove service using a certificate of service.
