The FTC has announced a partnership with enforcement agencies from seven other countries to launch a new information-sharing system that will help coordinate international consumer privacy efforts.
On October 26, 2015, the FTC announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding with seven other international enforcement agencies to create the Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN) Alert system. The GPEN Alert system is intended to enhance coordination among countries by allowing members to:
  • Share information about investigations.
  • Share best practices in addressing cross-border challenges.
  • Work to develop shared enforcement priorities.
  • Support joint enforcement initiatives and awareness raising campaigns.
After executing a data security and minimum safeguards certificate, members can access the GPEN Alert system to:
  • Alert other members about investigations and law enforcement matters.
  • Determine whether other members are investigating or taking enforcement actions against the same company, person, or practices.
A joint oversight panel of three GPEN members will perform operational duties for the system.
