Motion Calendar Hearing

A term used in Florida state-court litigation to refer to a hearing requiring five minutes or less that is set on the judge's Uniform Motion Calendar (UMC). Motion calendar hearings are set for the same time as hearings in other cases, and the court generally hears them on a first-come first-served basis.
Counsel should set motion calendar hearings for matters that require only one or two minutes of argument per side, such as:
  • Minor discovery disputes.
  • Motions to dismiss involving one or two issues.
  • Contested motions for extension of time.
  • Status conferences.
Counsel should set hearings requiring more than five minutes on the judge's special set hearing calendar.
