Jurat

The written certification at the end of a sworn affidavit made by an officer who administers an oath to the affiant. The officer certifies that the affiant made an oath before the officer regarding the truth of the contents of the affidavit. Most jurisdictions authorize several officers to administer oaths but notaries public are most commonly used.
The officer administering the oath signs and dates the jurat and states their office and any other information that may be required by applicable law. For example, a notary public typically indicates:
  • The notary's name.
  • The notary's identification or license number.
  • The county or jurisdiction in which the notary is qualified.
  • The date on which the notary's commission expires.
The notary's information is typically contained in a stamp or seal that can be affixed by the notary public to the jurat.
For an example of a jurat in a sworn affidavit, see Standard Document, Affidavit (NY).
