Glossary

Baseload

As used for electricity, electricity usage that is constant through a specified time period. Also used to refer to generating units that run 24 hours a day at a fixed level to serve a system's continuous demand. Nuclear and coal-fired generation are examples of baseload technologies. Some renewable technologies can offer baseload generation. For the purpose of the Contracts for Difference (CFD) awarded as part of the Electricity Market Reform (EMR) programme, baseload technologies are contrasted with intermittent technologies, and include nuclear, advanced conversion technology, anaerobic digestion, dedicated biomass with combined heat and power (CHP), biomass conversion, energy from waste with CHP, geothermal, hydroelectricity, landfill gas and sewage gas.
