This Law Firm Publication by Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. discusses Vermont's paid sick leave law, recently signed into law by Governor Peter Shumlin. The law, which requires that employees accrue paid sick leave at a rate of at least one hour for every 52 hours worked, becomes effective January 1, 2017. However, employers may elect to establish a waiting period of up to one year. Small businesses will not be required to comply until January 1, 2018. The law applies to all private employers doing business in Vermont but excludes part-time, temporary, per diem, and intermittent employees.
