A Practice Note identifying the types of court filings and other litigation documents that may be exempt from the public's general right of access under the First Amendment, the common law, and Section 16 of the Clerk of the Courts Act. This Note addresses the public's right of access and the exceptions to that right. This Note also explains the process for filing documents under seal in an Illinois circuit court action, including notifying the court, preparing the redacted and unredacted documents, serving and filing the documents, and sealing the documents.
