Hurdle

The minimum rate of return that a hedge fund must achieve for the fund manager to receive a performance fee from investors. The hurdle rate may be a pre-determined percentage or may be tied to an external benchmark such as LIBOR or the rate of return on US treasury bills. The purpose of the hurdle is to ensure that the fund manager receives a performance fee only if the fund generates returns greater than the returns the investor would have received had it invested elsewhere.
