Coding

Before beginning a document review in a document review platform, counsel determine what information they want to know about each document. A litigation technologist then creates a customized coding panel (coding form) that incorporates counsel's desired information, and document reviewers complete the coding panel for each document they review. Coding is the act of filling out a coding panel for each document.
Counsel often design a coding panel that, once completed by the document reviewer, tracks whether a document:
  • Is relevant.
  • Is responsive to specific requests for documents.
  • Is privileged.
  • Is confidential.
  • Relates to key substantive issues.
  • Relates to key witnesses.
  • May be used as a deposition or trial exhibit.
