The US Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force announced that it will host a public meeting to discuss how to communicate with consumers about license terms and restrictions relating to online transactions involving copyrighted works.
On March 21, 2017, the US Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force (Task Force) announced that it will host a public meeting on April 18, 2017 at the USPTO to discuss how best to communicate with consumers about license terms and restrictions relating to online transactions involving copyrighted works (82 Fed. Reg. 14505-01 (Mar. 21, 2017)). The meeting will focus specifically on:
  • How to clearly and effectively communicate copyright license terms to potential consumers in the online environment.
  • What copyright-related terms and conditions are important to communicate to these consumers.
  • Identifying best practices for communicating with online consumers about:
    • the intellectual property rights they are accessing or acquiring; and
    • the activities they are permitted to engage in without implicating intellectual property rights.
  • Whether additional work should be done to identify best practices in this area.
